Man & Shark

© Kees Metselaar 1996

Shark finning has been going on for a long time but with the economic growth of especially China the numbers of killed sharks are exploding.
Paul Hilton and Alex Hofford, based in Hong Kong, have now produced a book and short film
'Man & Shark', which explores the practice of shark-finning.
Look at http://www.manandshark.com/

In Hong Kong I live in Sheung Wan, shark fin wholesale area.
Also once in Tobelo in the North Moluccas in Indonesia I photographed local fishermen with just cut shark fins. See picture above.

Beauty and the Beast

Lamma Island's behemoth in the beautiful bay opposite Hung Shing Yeh Beach. This coal-fired powerplant was built in the seventies. The third chimney was added in the nineties. Lamma is one of the bigger islands in Hong Kong.

Mother Khong

The Mekong river in Laos seen from my flight from Hong Kong to Bangkok a few days ago.
Majestic and muddy it flows from Tibet to Vietnam, through Burma, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia over a distance of 4350 km.

Herat Horseback

Arriving in Herat in the West of Afghanistan from Iran was quite magical in 1978. Very few cars, men on horseback and no war.
The so-called communists under the leadership of Taraki had taken power in the capital Kabul just a month earlier but in the rest of the country it seemed very quiet. We could travel all over the place.
